Spay/Neuter/Vaccination Clinic

Hours: Tuesday-Friday, 8-12 noon, 1-4:30 and Saturday 9-12 noon

This low cost, quality care service is provided for the public by the County of Contra Costa in an effort to reduce the thousands of animals put to sleep each year. Experienced doctors and technicians care for your pet. High standard surgical procedures and drugs are used. High quality vaccines are given for the best protection against contagious diseases.

Pets receive a free physical examination when being brought in for spaying or neutering. There is no charge for office calls or follow-up exams. There is no extra charge if a female is in heat or less than four weeks pregnant.

Both residents of Contra Costa County and non-residents may use the clinic, which is staffed with licensed vetrinarians and animal health technicians.

All animals brought in for surgery should be picked up by 4:30 p.m. All spaying/neutering and vaccinations are given by appointment. Flea collars, flea sprays and powders, and pet carriers are also available for purchase at the clinic.

Spay: (Ovario-hysterectomy) Removal of the ovaries, uterus and fallopian tubes in the female animals.

Neuter: (Castration) Removal of the testicles in male animals.

Why Spay or Neuter an Animal?

The Operation:

• Prevents needless reproduction and destruction of animals.

• Is the most effective means of preventing pregnancy.

• Eliminates or reduces the attraction of male animals to the female.

• Reduces the male's tendency to fight and the resulting wounds and infection.

• Reduces the possibility of cancer or infection of the reproductive tract.

• Results in a generally healthier, more desirable pet.

• Allows spayed and neutered dogs and cats to be licensed at more than one-half the cost.

Why Would Someone not Wish to Spay or Neuter a Pet?

A purebred pet may be unable to compete in the show ring if it is spayed or neutered.

Pre and Post-Operative Requirements.

• Animals should be under control at all times, either on a leash or in a carrier box.

• Appointments are necessary for examinations, vaccinations and surgery.

• All animals must have proper vaccinations which may be given at the clinic at the time of the pre-operative exam. If your pet has received the vaccinations from your veterinarian, you must present certification of this before surgery.

• All fees must be paid at the time of the pre-operative exam.

• Food must be withheld for at least 12 hours before bringing your pet in for surgery. This is necessary to prevent the inhalation of vomit while under anesthesia.

• You must deliver and pick up your pet the times specified.

Eligibility Requirements for Spaying or Neutering.

1. Healthy dogs 4 months to 5 years and cats 3 months to 5 years are eligible for the clinic's services.

2. Dogs must have a valid Contra Costa license (unless dog lives out-of-county or inside Antioch city limits.

3. Dogs or cats must not be over four weeks pregnant or diseased.

4. Dogs must have a current rabies vaccination.

5. Dogs and cats must have a current distemper vaccination within one year.

6. The clinic veterinarian may disqualify any animal if, in his/her opinion, the animal is not medically sound for surgery.
